Saab and Volvo should merge!

Struggling Swedish automakers Saab and Volvo should merge into one company, separate from General Motors and Ford, said GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz in an interview at the Geneva Motor Show.
Saab — currently owned by GM but on the auction block — filed for bankruptcy in Sweden last week. Meanwhile, Ford is attempting to find a buyer for Volvo, with China’s Geeley expected to make a bid.

But Lutz said the companies would be best off as one.
“That way both we and Ford get rid of a problem,” Lutz told Swedish news agency TT at the Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland. Lutz said GM has been seeking a buyer for the company, but so far has not had any luck.

I think it will be hard. Buyers also look at the figures. Just like the Swedish government has done. Who wants to buy a firm that has reported losses, year after year, he queries.

Although Lutz expressed little confidence is finding a buyer for the brand, Saab CEO Jan Åke Jonsson said as many as eight parties have expressed an interest in acquiring the automaker.

Meanwhile, Volvo CEO Stephen Odell reportedly said he does not favor selling the company to a Chinese firm. He went on to confirm the Swedish government has guaranteed a $546 million loan from the European Investment Bank.
This story is far from over, so be sure to stay tuned for the latest developments.
