Although the odd Volvo 480 - you know, that funny hatchbackje hit with headlights - in 1985 the first front-wheel drive Volvo was formed in 1991, the 850 really the breakthrough of this technology in the Swedish brand.

Both cars are the first result of the project called Galaxy, which is conceptually very different from that of the previous achterwielaangdreven Volvo models.

As we know worked the Dutch wing of the mark in the Limburg 480 and later the 440 and 460, yet tinkered headquartered in Gothenburg, Sweden on what eventually would become the 850-series. A large family car, with four world premieres meant a revolution for Volvo.

Before that it was because a fairly modern and progressive construction, especially since the transverse block in a separate subframe hanging in the car. Even more typical was the front-wheel drive. Volvo had said before that time as little affinity with that concept, but the 850 provided a remarkable structure, the extremely small gearbox, along with the motor. A world first.

SIPS

Another first in the 850 was the construction of the Delta Link rear suspension. It contained a new type multi-link suspension that the benefits of an independent suspension (tight but comfortable and soft spring behavior) combined with that of a rigid axle (stability and good tracking). Furthermore, safety was a priority for the 850, partly due to the advent of the integrated SIPS (Side Impact Protection System) and STM, the mechanism that automatically adjusts level of safety on the size of the occupants.

850 resisted the beacons. Compared to its predecessors played pretty emotionless new sedan pieces more on emotion. Consider the behavior that was tighter and more vibrant than before, for a Volvo 850 actually sent the light-hearted. And of course the emotion came through plenty in those exhaust sound that Volvo has deliberately dark and sporty tuned. Behind the wheel that was highlighted by a sporty image dashboard that more than ever as a cockpit for the driver curled around. Still a Volvo, but be ready for the 'new era'.

Estate as a reinforcement

Initially, the 850 GLT in the Belgian Volvo plant in Ghent screwed together at a later stage, there were also copies of the band in the Swedish Torslanda.

First, all BMS's free twenty-valve turbo with 170 horsepower under the hood, but soon expanded the offerings from Volvo. For model year 1993 appeared the GLE, with a less stronger version of the five-cylinder with 140 hp and two valves per cylinder. Six months later, also enhanced the 850 Estate ranks, the first Volvo estate car that was equipped with high vertical taillights that covered the entire D-pillar.

In 1994, then a more powerful T5 model under the title, with a turbo which vijfpitter 225 hp and 300 Nm produced. As if that was not enough, Volvo unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show later that year the legendary T-5R with 240 hp. The first 2,500 copies were painted in the familiar, like Banana Cream Yellow color. This production number was sold out in no time, after a series of Volvo 2500 and 2500 black dark green ones built.

A legend was born. In 1996 also the 250 hp 850R and 850 with a five-cylinder TDI diesel in the nose. That year also fell from 716,903 copies produced the cloth for the most revolutionary Volvo in years, because in 1997 he entered as a highly modernized form by S70.
